We have a female rock star [Rebecca] causing turmoil because of her video, it induces violence. Plus she is opening her concert tour in Toronto. This is causing big problems for the force. A dead body is then found in her hotel room. Though she was drunk and can't remember, she confesses to the murder anyway. Nick doesn't think she did it. Our Blond "H" has also been pestered by visions of LaCroix, his dead master. (As far as he knows LC's dead - this is 1st season after all...)
Weird Nick dream sequences in this ep.- reminds me of Curiouser & Curiouser. Cool show though, I miss this sort of good television programing...
Nick has gone down to lock-up to talk to Rebecca. She sits on her cot playing a guitar. He enters:
N: "So there really is music beneath all the mechanics." [his arms are crossed as he talks to the woman strumming a tune and humming along]
She puts down her instrument.
Small talk between the two follows, about her music and such...
Cutting in:
N: [standing in the corner, arms still folded] "So I hope you're not giving the guards too much trouble. Any unusual exotic requests...
R: "No, but I was thinking of asking if they could possibly use a better quality of mashed potato flakes. But I'm trying to be a good girl.
N: "A good girl? [putting his hands in his pockets] You ought to be careful or you'll tarnish your image." [walking forward]
R: [standing now] "Ah...I couldn't tarnish, bend, fold, spindle or mutilate my image, [walking past Knight] if my life depended on it."
(Nickster pauses to relate the remark to his own past.)
N: [licking his lips quickly] "Does your life depend on it? [turning his gaze to follow her]
R: [her back is to Nick, she turns slowly to face him] "So you liked my song, huh?" [abruptly changing the subject]
N: "Yeah. [softly, smiling in agreement] Yeah, very much."
Nick steps forward and leans against the bars casually. Rebecca too, is braced by the cell behind her. A pan back reveals the pair chatting in the front corner of the cell.
R: "Actually the acoustics in here aren't too bad at all. I guess that's because there's not a lot of people around...absorbing the sound."
(Definitely kindred spirits here, they angst so well.)
N: [glancing around] "Well, you should be here on New Year's Eve "
R: "With any luck, I will."
N: "You like it here that much?"
(A Nikkie Soulmate Moment follows)
R: "Do you have any idea, what it's like, to watch yourself being
slowly immortalized?" (Our Blond One? No...he has no idea
Rebecca breaks the tension and grins ironically as she re-faces Nick.
R: "When I was a little girl...I used to want to be famous, can you imagine? Wanting...I mean...Aaah, I know it for a fact, but -- [pause] Be very careful what you wish for."
Their conversation is interupted by Rebecca's manager and entourage, barging in. They are there to set her free. The manager babbles on aimlessly as he walks the lonely star out.
Nick is left standing in the jail cell. The moment lost.
Alone now, he zones out --
Suddenly the Detective is bathed in blue light. He's locked in the cage. The clanking of a key ring across the cell's bars sharply attract his attention.
(Different time. Different place. Different Nick?)
A tall man in police uniform appears from the left. An old style officer's cap is on his pale head.
LC: "Congratulations." [as he halts his clanging]
Nicholas turns, stunned.
LC: "You're going to be released."
He offers Nick the set of keys, wiggling them close to the bars. The confused boy makes a grab for the ring. LaCroix snatches them back as he grins.
LC: "But only if you want to be released...that is."
(Oh, YES! That look of desperate hunger on our Blond Hormone's face! Release him from what, pray tell? Uncle's perpetual claim? Even in spirit. Nick's own imprisoned passion for his master? A haven away from the mortals he lives among? His vampiric nature? That mortality thing? My UFfish mind reels at the possibilities...)
LC: [taunting] "Remember, it's a bad, bad, world out there. Full of pain and suffering. Rejection, discrimination, persecution, prostitution...and loss. Well, Nicolas?" (It's that mortality thing...)
N: [determined] "I'm sure."
LC starts to laugh, uncontrollably, as he walks along the cell front. Nick follows him from the inside. The master vampire stops and regains enough composure to finally face his son. He looks up into the pleading eyes of his child, the young ones mouth still agape.
(Yes! Yes! The UFfness herein!)
LaCroix' left hand, with liquid grace, eases between the bars. His fingers gently caress the side of his child's face.
LC: [with feigned sincereity] "Oh, I'm so sorry Nicholas. It was all a joke. There is no release." (Told you, it has to be that mortality thing...)
LC loses it again, to vamp out at Nick through the bars. With returning hysteria, he walks off. Leaving our 'Lost Boy' alone in his self imposed prison.
